Scorpio Rising's progress has been swift and he's a strong candidate off a 7lb higher mark than at Windsor, but even less exposed could be UNKNOWN ENTITY who can come into his own now stepped back up in distance. The main danger may prove to be Four Springs, whose trainer Ben Pauling won this race in 2024, while Kaka's Cousin looks well treated and is also feared. Tennessee Tango, Wolf Walker and Cinquenta complete the shortlist.[Richard O'Brien] Show less
Spotlight: Progressing rapidly and completed a hat-trick of hurdles wins at Windsor (2m4f, soft) in January, coming from rear; more improvement required off 7lb higher mark and that's entirely possible; high on the list.
Spotlight: Improving at a rate of knots over hurdles and easily beat ten rivals at Kelso (2m, heavy) last month; stepping back up in trip should be in his favour and he might have been let in lightly on handicap debut; big chance.
Spotlight: Showed promise earlier in career for Willie Mullins and has shaped well on both starts for current yard, pulling clear with the odds-on favourite at Wincanton (1m7f, soft) in January; promises to be well suited by today's step back up in trip and he's unexposed as he moves in to handicaps.
Spotlight: Made winning start over hurdles at Hereford (2m, good) and has shown better form since, bumping into a useful type at Warwick (2m3f, soft) two weeks ago; represents same connections as 2024 winner Champagne Twist, wears headgear for the first time and may not have reached his ceiling just yet.
Spotlight: Represents the same trainer and jockey combination as last year's winner, Laurens Bay; beaten a neck by Precious Metal at Lingfield in December but off the mark at Market Rasen (2m5f, good to soft) seven weeks later, not hard pressed to assert; has to be considered.
Spotlight: Took a few goes to get off the mark over hurdles but did so in emphatic fashion at Plumpton (2m, soft), making all in a canter; bred to be suited by 2m4f+ and is a very interesting contender now tackling handicaps.
Spotlight: Hereford win (2m3f, good to soft) worked out well and he might have followed up at Ascot (2m5f, soft) with a more fluent round of jumping; still unexposed and not ruled out.
Spotlight: Has a different profile from most of these, having won three points in 2023-24 and begun his rules career with a run in a 3m2f hunter chase; solid second in 1m7f/2m hurdles this season, looking ready for a return to longer distances; gets that here and can improve now tackling a handicap.
Spotlight: Irish point winner with a progressive profile over hurdles; readily pulled 20l clear of The Boss Bear at Fakenham (2m4f, soft) three weeks ago; this is more competitive but he still has untapped potential.
Spotlight: Good second to Get On George at Doncaster (2m3f, good) before landing the odds in a small field at Hereford (2m5f, soft) in January; probably needs a bit more on today's handicap debut.
Spotlight: Point/bumper winner who made it 2-2 over hurdles when beating subsequent Dovecote winner Klub De Reve under a penalty at Exeter (2m, good to soft); however, he was turned over at odds-on at Leicester later in December and needs to bounce back.
Spotlight: Hasn't progressed as expected since Hereford win (2m, good) in the autumn and finished only fourth in handicap there in January; hopes rest on a change of trainer (same ownership) and the fitting of a tongue-strap.
Spotlight: Won an Irish point but is 0-3 over hurdles, put firmly in place by Cinquenta at Market Rasen (2m5f, good to soft) five weeks ago; one of two runners for Olly Murphy and Scorpio Rising looks the first string.
Spotlight: Best effort when defying a penalty at Doncaster (2m3f, good; beat Draco Malfoy by 2l) in December, but disappointing in a Grade 2 there six weeks ago; others may have more potential.
Spotlight: Made all at Doncaster (2m3f, soft) in January but could not pull off the same feat in a small field at Ffos Las two weeks ago and has something to find with several of these.
Spotlight: Bit disappointing when stepped up in trip over C&D (heavy) five weeks ago; had a solid record over 2m before then, winning at Lingfield (good to soft; by neck from Cinquenta), but he now needs to get back on track.
Spotlight: Second runner for Henrietta Knight; scrambled home at Leicester (1m7f, soft) just after Christmas and ran about as well as could have been expected behind Cinquenta and Gee Force Flyer at Market Rasen (2m5f, good to soft) next time; this is warmer.
Spotlight: Won a good-ground bumper at Plumpton last spring and off the mark over hurdles there in December; however, he was well held by Jury's In next time and ran poorly (heavy ground) just 13 days ago; cheekpieces now fitted; fair bit to prove.
